UV radiation-Well protected from dangerous UV radiation!

When we are outdoors, electromagnetic radiation in the form of so-called ultraviolet radiation (UV radiation for short) strikes our eyes. The rays of light are so short that the human eye does not perceive them, but they can cause permanent damage to the retina in a very short time. Because as well as our skin can suffer sunburn, the cornea of the eye can also "burn" after intense exposure to the sun. The use of proper sunglasses is essential to protect yourself from this.

UV radiation emitted by the sun consists of UV-C, UV-B, and UV-A radiation. While UV-C radiation with approximately 100-280 nm is absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere, UV-B radiation (approximately 280-315 nm) and UV-A radiation (approximately 315-380 nm) penetrate unhindered to the surface of the earth, even on cloudy or shadow days.

Therefore, your sports sunglasses should definitely have an CE mark, which indicates that your glasses have been tested and meet the EU guidelines for 100% UV protection (at least 380 nm).

Protective classes for sports sunglasses

Dark lenses alone are not enough to protect your eyes from dangerous UV radiation. You can see how well your sport glasses protect you from the UV rays of the so-called protection class according to EU standard 1836:

UV protection class 0: glasses absorb up to approximately 20% of UV radiation. Suitable for cloudy and twilight days. Not fit like sunglasses.

UV Protection Class 1: Glasses absorb approximately 20 to 57% of UV radiation. Suitable for cloudy days.

UV Protection Class 2: Glasses absorb approximately 57 to 82% of UV radiation. Suitable for sunny days in our latitudes.

UV Protection Class 3: Glasses absorb approximately 82-92% of UV radiation. Suitable for very sunny climates, the next beach holidays, mountain stays, etc.

UV Protection Class 4: Glasses absorb approximately 92-97% of UV radiation. Suitable for high mountain and glaciers. Not allowed on the road.

Ensure that the protective effect of the sunglasses corresponds to the intended use. This is the only way to protect your eyes from dangerous UV radiation and keep your perspective on your next tour.

400 nm: what are the "400 UV glasses" treated?

We now know that not only UV radiation in ranges below 380 nm is harmful to the human eye. In addition, radiation in the range of 400 nm, the so-called "blue component" of light, is said to be responsible for the damage and diseases of the retina. So, many eyewear manufacturers offer high quality sunglasses with a filter for the blue range of around 400 nm, which goes beyond the UV-A protection. These models are marked as UV400 sunglasses.

Many options: what features your sunglasses should have:

Tinted: The standard variant of sunglasses are tinted lenses. A filter is worked on the glass which, depending on the intensity of the dye, minimizes the penetration of the light.

Self-polarizing: Self-polarizing lenses are a particular highlight for anyone who is out of the house in changing light conditions. Photochromic lenses have embedded molecules that chemically react to light penetration and darken accordingly. As a result, the sunglasses are obscured with the increase of sunlight and become clear in cloudy light conditions. Photochromatic sports sunglasses are, therefore, an ideal choice for anyone who doesn't want to switch lenses on the go.

polarized: the polarized lenses have an integrated polarizing filter that absorbs reflected light. This ensures a particularly good minimisation of reflexes. The effect is particularly visible when you look at the water, the snow or the crystals, because almost no light reflections are seen when you bring polarized crystals. Ideal for low sun too!
